Create the life you really want

Having a life that is more aligned with your ideals, hopes, and values is meaningful and depends on the choices you make in your daily life, but despite this, many people find themselves stuck in situations that don't fit their expectations and hopes. So, how can you tell whether you are living the life you want?

The first aspect to consider is the goals that you have. Most  people have short-term and long-term goals that are associated with their life journey. For some people, these goals are more general, like “I want to have my own business” or “I want to have a house of my own”. For others, the goals can be much more specific, for example, “I want to be promoted to manager”. Whatever these goals are, most people have ambitions or dreams. However, a question to consider is: is your life aligned with your goals? Sometimes, we have goals that are simply pushed back further and further into the future or are not aligned with what you are doing right now. If you want to, for instance, travel the world, what are you doing today to make that happen? If your life is not aligned with your goals, it may be time to reconsider what's happening in your day-to-day routine.

The second aspect you might want to consider is how you feel most of the time. For many, their jobs can be a constant source of frustration and boredom with fulfillment or enjoyment being rare emotions. What is the proportion of positive and negative emotions that you feel?
Negative emotions are always going to be a part of our lives. However, if negative emotions are what we feel most or all of the time, then something might be off about your current situation.

A third aspect that you might want to consider is whether you feel in control of your life. Clearly, nobody is 100% in control of their lives, as there are always unexpected events and circumstances. However, the people who feel more satisfied with their lives are those who feel that they have control. Some people might feel that the direction of their lives depends primarily on the circumstances they experience and the actions of other people. They might doubt their ability to make lasting changes in their lives and to make significant alterations to their routines, jobs, relationships, and other important factors.

These are just three factors that might suggest that you are not living the life you want but instead a life that might feel unfulfilling. It might be good but it may also be out of alignment with some important aspects for you, for example, being too bogged in the routine and not allowing you to pursue your dreams. So, it may be important to see what you can do to change this around and live a life that is more “you”.

To make changes in your life, you need to make the commitment you want. It's fine to change any aspect of your life that is dissatisfying. For example, a dream job for someone else might not work for you, and it's OK to work and change it.

There are big changes and small ones; changes associated with the way you think and the decisions you make. For some people, it may be useful to start small and try different things to shape your life to fit you better.

Not everyone can make a radical change and throw everything away to start fresh. In fact, most people couldn't. But there are some things that you can do right away to start moving towards a better lifestyle. Consider your goals, for example, if you want to write a novel, set aside 15 minutes to write every day. Consider also the things that bring you positive emotions. What can you do to bring more happiness and enjoyment into your life? Finally, think about how in control you feel. What can help you feel more in control? For example, making small changes in your habits can be a good way to feel that you can live a life more aligned with your needs and wants.

First, Assess your current career

1. Take a step back. Literally get out of your chair and look around. Who is sitting there? How are you interacting with them? What is so great about this place? What do you hate about it? What bores you to death? Take a small career test for yourself.

2. Look at the things that excite you at work. Like totally get you into flow, when the world around you disappears. Write these things down.

Then, also assess the rest of your life

3. Look at the things outside of work that excite you most in life. Write these things down. And compare it with the list from 2.

4. Write down your priorities in life. Really detailed: Which things are more important than others? Rate how happy you are with each of these items on a scale from 1-10 (10=completely happy).

5. Sit down. Take 5 minutes and close your eyes in a quiet space. Think about a moment in life you were completely happy. Where were you? Who was with you? What were you doing? Write this down after going through it in your mind. You can also repeat this with 2 more peak life situations.

Find the patterns

6. Now take all the insights from the steps above and look at things that come back again and again in your notes and thoughts. These are your parameters that lie at the core of you and you need to get a career that makes you happy.

7. Look at the keywords from above. What is missing? Ask your friends, family, partner: What do they truly value in you? Write down only the things that are important and feel right to you.

Turn your insights into career paths

8. Now we start with the actual career and job search with a small career test. For a moment forget everything you have done in the past, your education, your jobs. Only look at the list of keywords. In what professional area can you find these? What are the first thoughts that come up for you? Find at least 3 different areas to explore further that are aligned with what you have found in steps 1.-7. This can be in your current career or something outside, dont think about how to get there, dream big and set your goals high!

9. Now its a big one for you: Talk to people that are working in the fields you identified in 8. Ask them about their experiences. Ask them about other related careers and things they see. Ask them about literally anything that might help you further exploring the opportunities. Talk to friends, colleagues, ex colleagues, connect with people on Linkedin and ask them if your assumptions are true and what they would suggest a person with the keywords you found for yourself.

Next step

10. What is the most daring thing you could do right now to move more towards the career you identified in this short career aptitude test? Now go out and do it! Seriously, do it.
